Career and Corporate Life Management Mentorship is an integral part of the holistic human capital development, and yet most ignored by the working professionals. Over many years I have observed how many professionals go through frustrations in corporate. We require mentors which have been there and seen it all. They’ll accompany corporate professionals through all of the A to Z stages of their career lives. That’s from deciding on the career direction, to the exiting stage.
What’s concerning is that hardly any professionals see a need to have Career and Corporate Life Management Project that is informed by their life purpose. Many are caught napping when things don’t go as anticipated. They find themselves reacting and oftentimes the steps taken are misplaced.
A mentor will alert you, particularly when everything seems to be happening smoothly and you’re enjoying harmony. That is when you should be preparing for all of the possibilities. This does not mean that we have to be paranoid. It is necessary to create our lives happen, as opposed to chasing after events when they’ve already happened. We must direct our own lives as we want them to be. There’ll be occasions when we don’t succeed. But when we make a miss we won’t fall far from our targets.
Career Management should be an activity from cradle to grave. The corporate life is just part of our bigger life journey. It should not be allowed to throw us out of equilibrium and run havoc with our lives. It has to increase our holistic lifestyle journey, rather than become our journey by itself.
If we had a good base early in our holistic human capital development, guided by our ancient life mentors, through to corporate and beyond, we ought to be victors in our travel. I haven’t heard of anybody who has succeeded in life without being assisted by others. We overlook such mentors and supporters by choice and ignorance. But we’re often reminded of such people when things fall apart. It is often tough to go to them when we are in trouble, because we’re ashamed that we cut connections together. Mentorship has to be a lifelong practice, and be obtained through all our holistic human capital development stages.
The best present for your mentors is to be effective in taking your life forward. The error you must not make is to believe you no longer need other people’s help, and you’ll be able to make it on your own. Everyone in your life is a gift and they matter until the end of your lifetime.
Career and Corporate Life Management isn’t a straight line. But we must master the following generic stages: career development education → enter first job → technician → admin → operational → specialist → supervisory → management → leadership → executive → directorship → board role → retirement → post retirement roles.
At any of the above stages one must have the ability to depart and take other opportunities which may present them. It is this detour that could throw one out of complete balance, or take one back and fro.
Oftentimes our career growth is interrupted by ourselves as a result of misreading unexpected developments. For instance we resign from our current jobs thinking that we are accelerating our expansion or maximizing our earnings, only to discover that over a long term we might have taken our expansion ten steps backward.
Such developments must be expected and find us ready when they occur.
There are many sub-cultures that might not be obvious to us. We can’t be blind and naive to these complexities. Mentors are valuable in helping us deal with such dynamics.
Corporate savvy is what we all have to live in corporate life. We must also understand when we have become corporate change agents and play such roles with responsibility. Take strategic choice to influence the culture of your corporate progressively. If you aren’t cut out to manage corporate dynamics and complexities you must also be aware of your limitations. It is sensible to accept your limitations and make critical measures to take a different direction that enhances your career management project.
Don’t leave your career and corporate life direction to chances. Own up and be guided by your larger purpose in life. Let your mentor be your daily partner. Invest personally in your mentorship program. The returns will surpass all the investments, efforts, and energies invest in your holistic career and corporate life management.
Your attitude to corporate politics, dynamics, and culture determines your success or failure. You decided to apply and join the corporate by yourself. Nobody owes you anything. Be a participant of the corporate game. But remember you are not special. You owe it to yourself to be successful.
